Coastal Areas Building Design Review

Hands-on community input into local planning decisions regarding Moreton Bay’s much loved coastal areas.

In 2023, City of Moreton Bay began the Coastal Areas Building Design Review project, which held a focus on Redcliffe Peninsula, Deception Bay, and Bribie Island.

Like many places across SEQ, City of Moreton Bay’s coastal areas were experiencing significant population growth and in-turn increased development, which in many instances, would result in changes to the areas urban fabric. The purpose of the project was to determine community sentiment toward the features of coastal buildings, seeking to ensure future buildings are inspired by local identity.

Client: City of Moreton Bay

This project required a highly experienced, multi-disciplinary team to ensure messaging around the planning process and building design process was clear and targeted. Fourfold Studio, Deicke Richards and Archipelago were appointed by Council to assist in project planning and delivery.

For each focus area, a series of community pop-ups and Community Reference Group meetings were held, for which community completed an EOI process. These sessions allowed the project team to deep-dive into community perspectives and unpack the key themes arising throughout the process.

The Reference Group sessions allowed passionate community members to participate in workshops that helped build literacy and knowledge in the planning space. As a result, many challengers became project allies after having the opportunity to voice their feedback directly with the project team, and have their fears listened to and addressed. These new project champions were equipped and empowered to discuss the project within their wider community networks.

Outcomes from this highly comprehensive process have been adapted into a series of detailed reports. These reports have been shared back with community and will assist in guiding future planning outcomes for the coastal regions.
