Active Stonnington Action Plan
As one of Melbourne’s most densely populated LGAs, City of Stonnington needed to explore innovative ways to encourage sports and recreation participation for their whole community.
The City of Stonnington local government area is home to over 114,000 residents, boasting a significant range of sporting complexes and reserves. Catalysed by the expiration of the existing framework, City of Stonnington, supported by Fourfold Studio, undertook a collaborative engagement process to guide the renewal of their Active Stonnington Action Plan and Sports Infrastructure Plan. In an effort to increase participation, inclusivity and accessibility in sports and recreation, the project aimed to inform an updated, action-focused strategy aligned with Council’s Fair Access Policy 2024-27.
Engagement occurred from February to May 2025, involving Council staff workshops, targeted sessions with sports clubs and underrepresented groups including targeted women and girls, youth and elderly resident sessions. Insights gathered through face-to-face sessions were complemented with broad community input through an online survey and in-person intercept surveys at popular parks and open spaces.
The engagement outcomes will shape a plan that meaningfully reflects community needs and supports increasing, equitable and sustainable participation in sports and recreation throughout the LGA.
